Resume Do’s

…To Help You Get Past the Application Stage

During the years of reviewing thousands of resumes from “inside” of companies, I regularly saw the same “Resume Don’ts”.  Below is a Top 5 List for how to STAND OUT and get the resume reviewer wanting to know more about YOU!

  1. Zero Typos – error-free – grammar, spelling (e.g. PowerPoint or other technology terminology), formatting (e.g. font sizes, indentations, etc.), contact information (e.g. correct phone number and email address) – once you have reviewed your resume X number of times, ask a friend, who you know has attention to detail, to review it with fresh eyes;
  2. Tell a Story – a 30-second story – it takes me 30 seconds to scan a resume to know if the person is qualified and to decide if I want to know more – make it flow, make sure it makes sense, and make it compelling;
  3. Keep it to 2 Pages or Less – think short story not novel – do not include every single detail of every single thing you have done – keep it concise, high level with key accomplishments, and include metrics if applicable, and make the resume reviewer want to know more about you;
  4. Make it Complete – account for all professional experiences – include any and all short-term employments as each is part of your story – don’t have gaps in your resume that don’t need to be there; and
  5. Be Unique – replace generic terminology with what makes you UNIQUE – e.g. remove “dynamic problem solver” and replace it with “[your unique value proposition].”
